51 Degrees North Coffee Company
51 Degrees North Coffee Company offers high quality, fair/direct trade, organic, eco-friendly artisan coffee & hot drinks on the go.
Founded by Justin Duerden, 51 Degrees North Coffee Company started off as a small idea. Having been in the professional diving and resort industry for many years as well as being involved in environmental and wildlife conservation, Justin and his wife Cheryl were lucky to have met on their travels, a couple who own a coffee plantation in Columbia, and through fruitful conversations about life, love and passion for coffee, the seed was planted in Justin's mind.
Yearning to learn more about the coffee industry and how to appreciate speciality coffees, Justin started his foray into understanding what it takes to make a great cup of coffee. It was through this discovery that he decided to start 51 Degrees North Coffee Company; 51°00’00.0000” North being the GPS coordinates of the area where the concept originated, just a stone’s throw away from where Justin and Cheryl lived and located over the River Torridge.
The essence of the business is to serve award-winning, top quality, consistent and expertly-extracted coffee beans roasted locally in Devon, using only biodegradable/recyclable coffee accessories and locally sourced fresh farm milk, supporting sustainable coffee plantations and direct trade. The van is kitted out to be as eco-friendly as possible too.
As a Devon mobile speciality coffee van, we insist on sourcing only the freshest and best quality ingredients from the South West.
Our hot drinks encompass Organic / Single Origin / Direct Trade / Rainforest Alliance and are all award-winning coffees and freshly melted real hot chocolate. Our chai and handcrafted organic teas are sourced in the Westcountry, supporting local suppliers as much as possible.
Our coffee is 100% traceable, SCAA Certified award-winning speciality coffee from an expert micro roaster in the Westcountry, roasted and ground as fresh as possible for our customers. We are also the first mobile coffee 'Brew Bar' in North Devon, serving up pour-over single origin filter coffees from our humble van.
We also use locally sourced fresh farm milk from Bideford in North Devon. The milk is refilled by the farm in our reusable jerry cans, thus eliminating / reducing the need to recycle soft plastic milk cartons. We also provide various non-dairy (vegan) milk options.
Because we care alot about the conservation of our planet and the environment, we’ve chosen right from the start to only use 100% compostable (biodegradable) coffee cups and lids. Our hand blended tea leaves are sourced from a Devon tea blender and we individually measure and bag our teas in 100% plastic free / biodegradable tea satchets.
Our coffee van is solar power assisted to help reduce our carbon footprint. Combined with precision timing, we use an old-school Astoria coffee machine to produce a consistent, finely-balanced brew.
51 Degrees North Coffee Company donates a percentage for every cup of coffee sold, to International Animal Rescue (IAR), our chosen charity that rescues, rehabilitates and releases distressed and injured wildlife. Read more about IAR here. We also offer home-baked palm oil free cakes and flapjacks, and strictly DO NOT use any products that contain palm oil, which is the main source of destruction of habitat for the orang utans that IAR rescues.
