URGENT! An ecopoetry screening and workshop

Get inspired. Get creative. Keep the conversation going.

In the lead up to COP26, the climate debate is becoming louder and we want to keep that volume turned up! This is a pivotal opportunity for world leaders to step up and commit to concrete action to implement the Paris Agreement.

The COP 26 conference signifies a moment of crisis and a moment of hope.

So why a poetry workshop?

Art is an important part of a healthy, dynamic, and compassionate culture; a way that we can connect with and communicate our feelings. Where facts and science form the basis of a logical argument, art allows us to connect with that argument on an emotional level - to feel and express what it means to us. We need both. We need people to understand the gravity of the emergency we are facing, and we need to inspire them to action.

So with that in mind, we invite you to join us and our neighbours Studio KIND. to keep the conversation going at our poetry workshop: URGENT! An ecopoetry screening and workshop.

The workshop will involve:

  • A screening of a series of short films as part of the Hot Poets project, run by Liv Torc and Chris Redmond and featuring a plethora of poets from across the country who have been tasked to produce poems that will what’s really going on in the fight for the planet and their visions for a better and possible future

  • Short break to allow for discussion and tea drinking

  • One hour workshop hosted by our own resident poet Tia Meraki (aka our Operations Assistant), creating collaborative and individual poems on the theme of climate change and sustainable behaviour change, taking inspiration from the films and also from some of our beach and community clean finds

Everyone is welcome whether you’re a practicing poet or have never knowingly rhymed a couplet.

THE BACKGROUND AND COP26

Each government’s five year review of policies at national level to keep us within 1.5 degrees warming, already delayed for a year thanks to the unfolding pandemic, are now due to be presented and agreed at the November conference in Glasgow. After that, we’re potentially looking at another five years before governments come together in this way to look at practicable changes they can implement in their own countries, by which time 1.5 degrees may well be out of reach. Whatever comes out of the conference, this is a crucial time, and it’s important that we don’t allow the conversation to die down as the headlines move on.
